A Prayer for Protection for Missionaries and Their Families

“The Lord will keep you from all harm — he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” — Psalm 121:7–8 (NIV)

When you pray for protection for missionaries and their families, you’re lifting up some of the most courageous servants in God’s kingdom — people who have left the familiar and the comfortable to carry the gospel into hard places. Maybe you’re praying for someone you love who is far from home, or for your own family on the field, or for the global church laboring in difficult and sometimes dangerous regions. The concerns are real: physical safety, spiritual warfare, loneliness, cultural strain, the toll on marriages and children, and the weight of being far from support. Your concern for them is itself an act of love and partnership in their work.

Hold on to this gently: God goes before His servants and walks beside them. He never sends His people anywhere He will not be present, and He is not limited by borders, dangers, or distance. He watches over their coming and going, sustains them when they are weary, and surrounds them with His care. We cannot guarantee they will be spared every hardship, but we can entrust them fully to the One who keeps them. Come and lift these beloved laborers before the God who loves them even more than we do.

A Prayer for Protection for Missionaries and Their Families

Father, You are the keeper who never slumbers or sleeps, watching over Your people wherever they go. I lift up to You the missionaries and their families who have left so much behind to carry the good news of Jesus into the world. You see every place they serve, every danger they face, and every burden they bear.

Lord, surround them with Your protection. Guard their bodies from harm, sickness, and accident. Shield them from the spiritual forces that oppose Your work, and let no weapon formed against them prosper. Watch over their coming and going, in travel and in the places they call home far from their own.

Strengthen them when they are weary, and encourage them when they are discouraged or lonely. Provide for their every need, and remind them they are not forgotten by You or by Your church. Protect their marriages from strain and their children from harm, fear, and bitterness; let their families flourish even in hard places, and let their home be a refuge of Your peace.

Make their witness fruitful, Father. Open doors no one can shut, soften hearts, and let Your Word spread and be honored through them. Fill them with boldness, wisdom, and Your love for the people they serve.

And in all things, help them to trust You. Whether You lead them through abundance or hardship, safety or trial, keep them anchored in Your faithfulness. Not their will, but Yours be done. Be their shield, their refuge, and their ever-present help. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Short Prayer for a Missionary in Danger

Lord, right now I lift up Your servants who are in harm’s way. Be their shield and their refuge. Surround them with Your protection, hide them in the shelter of Your presence, and deliver them from every danger. Give them courage and peace in the midst of fear, and remind them that You are with them. Watch over their lives, Lord. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for the Missionary’s Spouse and Children

Father, I lift up the families on the field — the spouses who serve and sacrifice alongside, and the children who are growing up far from all they once knew. Protect their hearts and bodies. Guard the children from fear, loneliness, and resentment, and let them know they are deeply loved. Strengthen the marriage and bind the family together in Your love. Let their home be a place of joy, safety, and peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for Strength and Encouragement

Lord, the work is demanding and the days can be long and lonely. Pour fresh strength into Your weary servants. When they feel discouraged or unseen, remind them that their labor is not in vain and that You see every sacrifice. Renew their joy, refresh their spirits, and surround them with encouragement and support. Let them draw deeply from Your well that never runs dry. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for Fruitful Ministry

Father, multiply the work of their hands. Open doors for the gospel that no one can shut, and prepare hearts to receive Your truth. Give them wisdom in unfamiliar cultures, words to speak, and Your love for the people they serve. Let Your name be made known and lives transformed through their faithfulness. May their witness bear lasting fruit for Your kingdom and Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer of Trust and Surrender

Lord, I cannot be with these servants to protect them, but You are always near them. I surrender them and their families into Your faithful hands, trusting that You love them even more than I do. Whether You lead them through safety or hardship, keep them anchored in You. Help me to keep praying and supporting them, and to trust You with all that I cannot control. Not my will, but Yours be done. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Word of Encouragement

Missionaries often serve quietly and far from the encouragement of home, carrying burdens most of us never see — danger, isolation, culture shock, financial strain, and the weight of caring for a family in an unfamiliar place. So when you pray for them, know that you are doing something genuinely powerful. Many missionaries will tell you that the prayers of the people back home are among the most vital lifelines they have.

Don’t underestimate your part in their work. Praying for their protection, their families, and their ministry is real partnership in the gospel, even from a distance. And if you can, pair your prayers with tangible encouragement — a message, a note, financial support, or simply letting them know they’re remembered. Few things refresh a weary missionary like knowing they’re not forgotten.

Above all, entrust them to God rather than carrying the anxiety alone. He loves them more than you do, He goes before them and stays beside them, and He is faithful to keep them in ways we cannot. Keep praying, keep encouraging, and rest in the truth that the One who sent them is the One who watches over them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pray for missionaries?
Pray for their physical safety and spiritual protection, for strength when they’re weary, and for their marriages and children. Pray that God provides for their needs, opens doors for the gospel, and gives them boldness and wisdom. Entrust them fully to God, who watches over their lives (Psalm 121:7–8).

What does the Bible say about God protecting His servants?
Scripture promises God’s vigilant care: “The Lord will keep you from all harm” (Psalm 121:7). He tells His servants to be courageous “for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9), and Jesus promises His presence “to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).

How can I support missionaries besides praying?
Pair prayer with tangible encouragement: send messages and notes, give financially, and let them know they’re remembered. Few things refresh a weary missionary like knowing they’re not forgotten. Practical support and faithful prayer together are a powerful partnership in their gospel work.

How do I pray for a missionary family’s children?
Pray for the children’s protection, both physical and emotional, and that they would feel deeply loved and secure even far from home. Ask God to guard them from fear, loneliness, and resentment, to help them adjust, and to let them experience their own genuine joy and faith.

Does praying for protection guarantee missionaries will be safe?
No. Prayer is powerful, but it isn’t a guarantee against all hardship, and faithful servants do sometimes face danger and suffering. We pray boldly for protection while trusting God’s wisdom and presence, knowing He is with His people even in trial and that nothing separates them from His love.
