A Prayer for Peace and an End to War in Ukraine and Other Regions

“He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire.” — Psalm 46:9 (NIV)

When you pray for peace and an end to war in Ukraine and other regions, you’re crying out over suffering that has touched millions of lives. Across Ukraine and in conflict zones around the world, families have been torn apart, homes and cities destroyed, children traumatized, and countless lives lost. Whether you’re praying from afar with a heavy heart, lifting up loved ones caught in the conflict, or grieving the seemingly endless cycle of violence in our world, the weight of it can feel crushing. The suffering is staggering, and our helplessness in the face of it is real. That ache you feel for people you may never meet reflects the heart of God, who grieves over every life lost to war.

Hold on to this gently: God is not distant from these conflicts, and He is not powerless against them. He is the God who makes wars cease, who shatters the weapons of destruction, who hears the cries of the suffering and draws near to the brokenhearted. He is sovereign over the nations, and He is moving history toward the day when war will be no more and swords will be beaten into plowshares. We cry out for His intervention and His peace now, trusting His power and His compassion even when we cannot understand His timing. Come and bring Ukraine, every war-torn region, and all who suffer before the God who alone gives lasting peace.

A Prayer for Peace and an End to War in Ukraine and Other Regions

Father, You are the Lord of Hosts and the Prince of Peace, sovereign over all the nations, and You alone can make wars cease to the ends of the earth. I come to You grieving over the war in Ukraine and the conflicts raging in other regions of our world. You see every city under fire, every family torn apart, every soldier and civilian, every grieving mother, every frightened child. None of it is hidden from You.

Lord, I cry out for peace. Bring an end to this war and to the wars devastating other lands. Break the weapons of destruction, frustrate the plans of those who pursue violence, and turn hearts away from aggression and toward peace. Where leaders thirst for power and conquest, restrain them. Where there could be a way toward reconciliation, open it. Intervene, Father, as only You can.

I pray for all who suffer in these conflicts. Protect the innocent and the vulnerable. Comfort the grieving, shelter the displaced and the refugees, heal the wounded, and provide for those who have lost everything. Be especially near to the children whose lives have been shattered by violence. Let Your mercy reach the darkest places of war.

Give wisdom and courage to those working for peace, and strengthen all who labor to bring aid and relief. Use them as instruments of Your compassion.

I confess, Lord, that the scale of this suffering overwhelms me, and Your timing I do not understand. Yet I trust that You are good, that You hear the cries of the suffering, and that one day You will wipe away every tear and war will be no more. Until that day, have mercy, bring peace, and let Your kingdom come. Not my will, but Yours be done. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Short Prayer for an End to the Fighting

Lord, have mercy on the people suffering in war right now. Bring an end to the fighting in Ukraine and in every place torn by conflict. Protect the innocent, comfort the grieving, and shelter the displaced. Turn hearts toward peace, and let the violence cease. Intervene, Father, and bring the peace that only You can give. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for the People of Ukraine and War-Torn Lands

Father, my heart breaks for the people of Ukraine and all who endure war in other regions. Draw near to those whose lives have been devastated, the wounded, the grieving, the displaced who have lost their homes. Provide shelter, food, safety, and comfort. Protect the refugees on dangerous journeys, and watch over the children. Sustain their hope, and let them know they are not forgotten by You or by the world. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer to Turn Hearts Toward Peace

Lord, You can turn the hardest heart. I pray that You would turn the hearts of those who wage and prolong these wars away from hatred, pride, and the thirst for power, and toward peace. Restrain the violent, and raise up voices for peace and reconciliation that will be heard. Break the cycles of vengeance, and make a way toward genuine and lasting peace where it seems impossible. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer for Soldiers and the Families Who Wait

Father, I lift up the soldiers caught in these conflicts, and the families at home waiting in fear for their loved ones. Protect those in harm’s way, and comfort the families living in dread and uncertainty. Be near to all who grieve those who will not return. Bring this war to an end so that families can be reunited and lives can be rebuilt. Surround them with Your presence and Your peace. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Prayer of Trust Amid the World’s Suffering

Lord, the wars and suffering of this world overwhelm me, and I don’t understand why so much pain is allowed. But I choose to trust You. You are sovereign, You are good, and You hear the cries of the suffering. I surrender my anguish and these war-torn lands into Your hands. Help me to keep praying, to keep caring, and to trust that one day You will make all things right. Your kingdom come. In Jesus’ name, amen.

A Word of Encouragement

The war in Ukraine and conflicts around the world represent staggering suffering, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed, heartbroken, or even helpless watching it unfold, especially as it stretches on with no easy end in sight. So first, hear this: the grief you feel over the suffering of people you may never meet reflects the very heart of God. He is not numb to the violence of our world, and He has not abandoned its victims. Your prayers matter.

It can be tempting to think prayer is too small a response to wars so vast. But intercession is genuinely powerful, reaching into places we never could and inviting God to work where human efforts fall short. Beyond praying, consider supporting trustworthy humanitarian organizations providing relief to those affected, however you’re able. That, too, is an act of faith and love.

Guard your own heart as well. Constant exposure to news of war and suffering can lead to despair and numbness. Bring the world’s pain to God in prayer, then entrust to Him what you cannot carry or control. And hold on to this hope: God is sovereign, He hears the cries of the suffering, and history is moving toward the day when He will make all things right and war will be no more. Until then, keep praying, keep caring, and rest in the Lord of peace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I pray for the war in Ukraine and other conflicts?
Pray for an end to the fighting, for protection and comfort for civilians and refugees, for hearts to turn from violence toward peace, and for wisdom for peacemakers and aid workers. Cry out for God’s mercy and intervention, and entrust these war-torn lands to His sovereign care (Psalm 46:9).

What does the Bible say about war and peace?
Scripture portrays God as one who “makes wars cease to the ends of the earth” (Psalm 46:9) and promises a future where “nation will not take up sword against nation” (Isaiah 2:4). It blesses peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) and shows God as “a refuge for the oppressed” (Psalm 9:9).

Does praying really help end wars?
Yes. Prayer is genuinely powerful, inviting God to work where human efforts cannot reach. It’s something everyone can do. Beyond praying, you can also support trustworthy humanitarian organizations and advocate for peace. These are all meaningful acts of faith and love in response to suffering.

Why does God allow war and so much suffering?
This is one of the hardest questions, and it’s okay to wrestle with it honestly. Much suffering flows from human sin and the misuse of free will. Scripture doesn’t fully explain the “why,” but it assures us God grieves violence, hears the suffering, and will one day end all war (Revelation 21:4).

How do I cope with feeling overwhelmed by the suffering of war?
Bring the suffering to God in prayer, then entrust to Him what you can’t carry. Guard your heart by limiting constant immersion in distressing news, channel your concern into prayer and tangible help where possible, and anchor your hope in God’s promise to one day make all things right.
